An advantage of staying in smaller hotels is that the owners usually have good local knowledge, and their advice can enhance your stay. Some of them will even take guests out for the day, rather like I do at Villa Ralfa.
This is not to decry all the large hotels; some of them are very modern and flashy. But no matter how many stars, swimming pools, health spas or restaurants a five-star, all-inclusive resort hotel might have, you will not see a lot of Crete from the inside of it. If you want part of your Cretan holiday to be quiet, head for the south, in particular the southwest.
Its distance from the airports makes it less popular with package tourists because of the long transit times from the airport. If that sounds a bit daunting, shorter gorges can be found to the east of the island, such as the mysterious Valley of the Dead , a Minoan site near Zakros. The early and late parts of the season are one of the best times to visit, as it is less crowded and the cooler temperatures are more conducive to active pursuits.

We do get travellers during the winter, although most tourist hotels and many tavernas are closed. But if you do visit then you will see the mountains wearing a mantle of green, with snow here and there, and the olive groves carpeted with wild flowers.

In fact visitors from France, where they seem to know a bit about wine, often discard clothing and fill their baggage with Cretan wine to take back to France. Even the road signage can be a point of interest with some place name signs full of bullet-holes, and spellings that differ both in the Latin character version and the Greek.
Like any other country, a native or visitor must respect the religious and moral views on Crete, which is also renowned for hospitality. Locals mostly want to know where you come from, what you do for a living, are you married, do you rent or own you home, how much did you pay for it, or how much rent you pay, how much you earn I have been asked that! In a country where family ties are strong and family history is important, if you can say that you can trace your family back years they will be really interested.
Hersonissos also has one of the best known nudist beaches on the island photo left , it is not specifically gay, but most days it is only men, and is an excellent place to meet other travellers and indeed, a few locals. Around the island many of the beaches such as Kalives, Kommos, Agia Fotia, Vai, and Georgioupouis also have nudist sections and some discreet cruising too.
But you will not see much of Crete from the inside of a resort hotel no matter how many stars, or Tex Mex restaurants it has.
